24/05/2010 |
On 24th May Newry and Mourne Museum unveiled a mayor revamp of its main exhibitions, and launched the ‘Memory Postcard’ initiative. Many former McCann’s workers, and those who work for Irwin’s Bakery in Portadown attended the event
Commenting on the event Cllr. Charlie Casey, Deputy Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council said that, “the Museum offers a wide range of services to the community and this is reflected in the support we receive from members of the public. People have been very generous and many of the items donated over the last three years have been invaluable providing insights into what life was like for the people of Newry and Mourne, down through the centuries.”
Not only was the launch an opportunity for visitors look at the new donations that have been acquired, but it forms part of one of the Museum’s main objectives, that of refreshing the exhibitions on a regular basis.
The revamp of the main exhibitions included the acquisition of two new exhibitions cases, one which reflects the business history of Newry and Mourne and the other focuses on the history of McCann’s Bakery.
The event also saw the launch of the Reminiscence Networks ‘Memory Postcard’ a new initiative targeting visitors to the Museum. People can jot down some of their own memories via the postcards as they progress through the museum galleries. Hopefully the exhibitions will be trigger their memories and then they will record, stories and anecdotes and share them with us.
If you have a memory you would like to share with us visit Newry and Mourne Museum, which is open to the public seven days a week with admission free of charge.
