Education
The museum has an education programme for everyone.
School Programme
Museum staff provide lessons on the following topics
that utilise artefacts from the handling collection and are based
on the Newry and Mourne area:
- Life in Early Times
- The Vikings
- Life in Victorian Times
- The Second World War
- The Newry Canal
- Sixteenth Century Newry (based around Bagenal’s Castle)
Lessons are £1 per child and can be booked
by contacting the museum.
Research
The museum has a vibrant research programme, and
has published articles on the Reside Collection, documented the
effects of the decommissioning programme on the fishing community
at Kilkeel and has researched local lace-making industries.
Cross-Border Education Project
Newry and Mourne Museum and Dundalk County Museum successfully
gained funding from Co-operation Ireland for a two year cross border
cultural exchange project. An exciting and diverse range programme
for all ages and interests has been devised. Recent events include
the following:
- Genealogy courses
- Oral history project with schools and community groups
- Lectures on understanding Unionism
- Carlingford Lough Maritime Heritage Festival.
